파비앙 베르쉐르는 신화적 모티프를 통해 인간의 존재와 역사를 탐구한다. 원인을 알 수없는 병으로 인해 어린시절을 병원에서 보낸작가는 무료한 시간들을 견뎌내는 방법으로그림을 그리기 시작하였다. 만화에서 본 캐릭터, TV속 인물들, 보고싶은 친구들, 그리고 컴퓨터, 인형, 주사위, 동물, 식물 등 일상의 소재를 비롯하여 상상 속의 하이브리드 생명체등을 그리기 시작하였다. 이러한 캐릭터들은 하나씩 작가의 머리속에 자리잡아 그만의 창작의 세계를 머리속에 구현하게 되었고, 오늘날 작가 작업의 주요소재가 된다. 작가의 작품에서 자주 볼수있는 해골은 단순히 두려운존재인 죽음을 나타내는 것은 아니다. 삶과 죽음의 경계에 있던 작가에게 어느순간 죽음은 더이상 두려운 존재가 아닌 누구에게나 언젠가 다가오는 존재가 되었고, 이를 두려워 하는것 대신 자신만의 작업에 자연스럽게 녹여내면서 죽음을 의미하기보다는 살아있다는것을 깨닫게 해주는 상징이 되었다.
Fabien Verschaere was born in born in 1975 in Vincennes, and currently lives and works in Paris. Verschaere’s body of work explores the human condition. Traversing a space between dreams and nightmares, his work invokes the world seen through the eyes of a child scarred by long stays in the hospital. Using imaginary and fantastic codes with continuous references to pop culture, Verschaere projects the viewer into a child’s dream, a world inhabited by hybrid creatures, monsters and strange animals – all fruits of his wild imagination. Through these creatures he creates his own mythology: a theatre of emotions and intimate experiences that seems to be animated by a play of contradictions: between beauty and repulsion, life and death, humor and anguish. Verschaere faithfully produces his world through watercolors, drawings, paintings on canvas, installations, and film. Viewers are thus invited to plunge into this dreamlike world.
